ABOUT US

Advocates For Animal Rights (AFAR) is a 501c3 Companion Animal Rescue. AFAR has two locations: our first location is In the Beautiful State of Michigan, and our second location is in the Impressive State of Tennessee!

Our primary goal is to raise NO-KILL Companion Animal Sanctuary's at both sites, offering a safe haven to all homeless animals. They will have permanent, safe and loving place to live until a forever home for them is found. However, if a forever home is not readily available, the sanctuary will remain their home away from home until a forever home is found.

Carmen

This is Carmen. She came to AFAR from Lansing MI. When we first spotted her, she was trotting along Saginaw Street, happy go lucky, apparently unaware that there were 4 lanes of busy rush hour traffic within inches of her zooming by. It didn’t bother her as she sniffed everything that didn’t move (and a couple of things that did move, too). Common practice is that we usually let the runaway dogs help determine their own new name by calling out random names, and the dog responds to the one they seem to like best. But that’s not how it happened with Carmen. As we stopped to scoop her up, just as clear as a bell, and as she stood there staring at me, the name Carmen Miranda came bursting into my mind. I said, “Carmen” out loud and she happily trotted her blissful little self towards me and sat down right at my feet. I picked her up, she licked my face, and that was that. She now lives happily in her new forever home, being a typical beagle, doing what she does best-looking adorable.
